Ten persons, including a few women, were arrested for allegedly operating a fake call centre from Nalasopara in Maharashtra’s Palghar district and extorting money from US citizens by posing as officials, police said on Thursday.
Police had launched a search for the 'woman' after traders in Vasai-Virar region complained of being sweet-talked by a woman. Ambekar would go to jewelry showrooms, grocery shops and medical stores, where cellphone numbers of owners were displayed on name boards. Police said Ambekar would call up and show interest in making purchases.
The two would target the elderly or women with children trying to withdraw money. The victims would hand over their cards and PINs to them. After helping them make withdrawals, they would swap the cards with expired cards. The two would then later use the cards and PINs to withdraw money.
