Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar is set to become one of the most significant proposed transport projects for the region, with Maharashtra approving a major investment aimed at improving east-west connectivity between Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar.
The proposed corridor, estimated at ₹17,724.99 crore, is designed to provide an alternative to crowded roads and suburban trains while connecting several important residential and commercial areas across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The project is part of a broader infrastructure push in Maharashtra that also includes the expansion of Pune’s eastern ring road.

Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar: 25.03-Km Corridor
The Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar corridor is planned to cover approximately 25.03 km, with 16 stations proposed along the route.
According to the project details, around 21.78 km will be elevated, while another 3.25 km will run underground. The underground section is particularly significant because it is intended to address construction challenges in densely populated parts of the corridor.
The route is expected to connect Mira Road, Vasai, Nalasopara, Naigaon and Virar, creating a new east-west public transport link for residents who currently depend heavily on suburban trains and road transport.
Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar to Link Key Railway Stations
One of the biggest advantages of Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar will be its integration with the existing suburban railway network.
Interchange facilities are proposed at Naigaon, Nalasopara and Virar, allowing passengers to shift between metro and local trains more conveniently.
The corridor is also planned to connect with Metro Line 9, which currently forms the metro link between Dahisar and Mira-Bhayandar. MMRDA’s current master-plan information lists Metro Line 13 as the Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road)-Virar corridor.
This integration could be particularly important for daily commuters travelling between Vasai-Virar, Mira-Bhayandar and Mumbai.
Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar’s Creek Bridge Could Be a Game Changer
A major engineering feature of Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar is the proposed integrated road-and-metro bridge across Vasai Creek.
The bridge is planned to carry both metro and road traffic, creating an additional east-west connection between the two sides of the creek. Earlier plans for the project have described the structure as a double-decker bridge, with road traffic on one level and metro services on the other.
The road component is expected to provide six lanes, with three lanes in each direction.
For Vasai-Virar residents, this could be as important as the metro itself. The creek has long been a major physical barrier between the region and Mira-Bhayandar, while existing road routes can experience severe congestion during peak hours.
Chikhal Dongari Metro Depot Planned
The Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar project also includes a proposed metro depot at Chikhal Dongari in Virar.
The project is expected to require approximately 24.84 hectares of land. Authorities have also been directed to move quickly on land acquisition and access-road development.
The reported target is to complete the corridor within five years after the necessary approvals, although actual construction timelines will depend on land acquisition, tendering, clearances and execution.
The latest MMRDA information confirms Metro Line 13 as part of the region’s planned metro network, while recent reports indicate that the revised DPR has moved through the approval process.
Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar Could Cut Travel Time
For residents, the biggest expected benefit of Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar is shorter and more predictable travel.
The corridor is projected to carry around 4.49 lakh passengers a day by 2031, according to the project figures provided for the proposal.
A dedicated metro connection could reduce dependence on private vehicles and provide another option for commuters travelling between the rapidly developing suburbs of Palghar and Thane districts.
It could also reduce pressure on major roads and the Western Railway network by giving passengers another high-capacity public transport option.
However, the actual impact will depend on station accessibility, interchange design, service frequency and how effectively the new metro integrates with existing transport systems.
Why Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar Matters to Local Residents
Vasai-Virar has experienced rapid residential and commercial growth, increasing pressure on roads, railway stations and existing transport infrastructure.
The proposed Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar therefore represents more than another metro project. It could establish a new east-west mobility corridor for a region where travel between neighbouring suburbs can often be difficult.
VasaiCity has previously reported on the region’s wider infrastructure plans, including the proposed Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor, which could further expand regional connectivity.
The combination of metro, road and rail projects could gradually change how residents travel within Vasai-Virar and towards Mumbai.
Pune Ring Road Also Gets Major Infrastructure Push
Alongside the Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar project, Maharashtra has approved a revised cost of ₹10,502.36 crore for the eastern expansion of the Pune Ring Road.
The 31.805-km access-controlled road is planned between Soratwadi on the Pune-Solapur Road and Varve (Budruk)-Shivare on the Pune-Satara Road.
The objective is to divert inter-state and intra-state traffic away from central Pune, reducing pressure on the city’s existing road network.
The larger Pune Ring Road project is being developed through multiple agencies. Maharashtra’s Urban Development Department provides details of the wider project and its land-acquisition framework.
Six-Lane Pune Corridor Planned
The eastern expansion is planned as a six-lane corridor with a design speed of up to 120 kmph.
The project includes one interchange, three major bridges, five minor bridges, 18 elevated sections or flyovers and four tunnels.
The eastern section is targeted for completion by June 2029, according to the project information provided in the announcement.
The larger ring-road network is intended to keep heavy and through traffic away from Pune city, potentially improving travel conditions for residents as well as freight and long-distance traffic.
Two Projects, One Larger Infrastructure Push
The Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar corridor and Pune’s eastern ring road serve different regions and different transport needs.
For Vasai-Virar, the metro project could provide a long-awaited east-west public transport connection, while the integrated creek bridge could add a crucial road link.
For Pune, the ring road is primarily designed to divert through-traffic away from the urban core.
Together, the projects reflect Maharashtra’s growing focus on large-scale transport infrastructure to accommodate population growth, rising vehicle ownership and increasing regional travel demand.
For residents of Vasai, Nalasopara, Naigaon and Virar, the key question now will be how quickly Metro Line 13 Vasai-Virar moves from planning and approvals to actual construction.
