On Wednesday, the newly constituted Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) police commissionerate activated the emergency number "112" for inhabitants of Mira Road, Bhayandar, Naigaon, Vasai, Nalasopara, and Virar. The distress calls will be responded to by beat marshals.
The St Gonsalo Garcia College in Vasai has been turned into a 750-bed Covid care centre. Vasai-Virar was declared a red zone on Friday.
Of the 115 arrested accused in the Palghar lynching case wherein 3 people were murdered, one 55-year-old accused has tested positive for Covid-19, confirmed Dr Dinkar Gavit, medical superintendent of Rural Hospital, Palghar. The accused was arrested by Kasa police on April 17 and has since been in lockup along with 20 other accused in the case. He was produced before the Dahanu court and has been remanded in police custody till 14 May. The arrested accused in the case have been lodged in different police stations in a bid to avoid overcrowding amid lockdown.
A 57-year-old man from Nalasopara died of Covid-19 in a private hospital on Monday. With this, the death toll in Palghar district has risen to five. Four of these deaths are in Vasai-Virar region. The patient was admitted to the private hospital in Nalasopara (west) on April 4. He was tested positive and undergoing treatment.
As the figure of coronavirus positive cases climb quickly in the district, with the densely populated pockets in Vasai-Virar municipal corporation emerging as the most affected zone, the Palghar district administration has barred refuelling all types of private vehicles at petrol pumps from 11 am on Thursday.
Book those found violating home quarantine under IPC Section 188 and move them to institutional quarantine, Palghar district collector Kailash Shinde ordered the police in the Vasai-Virar region.
