In a thrilling and challenging Vasai-Virar Marathon 2023 that unfolded on Sunday, the spotlight shone brightly on Thirtha Pun, a formidable athlete hailing from the Gorkha Regiment in Darjeeling. Pun emerged victorious in the 42-kilometer marathon, showcasing an extraordinary display of endurance and skill.

Completing the full marathon in an impressive time of 2 hours, 21 minutes, and 48 seconds, Thirtha Pun secured the top spot, marking his debut in the Vasai-Virar Marathon 2023. The competition was fierce, with participants from various walks of life converging to test their mettle against the backdrop of Vasai’s picturesque natural surroundings.

In the women’s category, Prajakta Godbole dominated the 21-kilometer segment, while in the men’s category, M.D. Nurhasan claimed the lead. The event, aimed at raising awareness for issues affecting women in society, featured the inspiring slogan, “Prevent Female Infanticide, Nurture Nature’s Embrace.

A staggering 14,000 participants joined forces to complete the marathon, emphasizing the growing popularity and significance of the event in its 11th national edition. The enthusiasm was palpable as the marathon kicked off at 5 AM, with runners choosing from different distances: 5 kilometers, 11 kilometers, 21 kilometers, and the challenging 42 kilometers.

The marathon, boasting a diverse range of participants, witnessed massive crowds cheering along the various routes. The spectators, including children, women, senior citizens, and differently-abled individuals, contributed to the vibrant atmosphere, sending powerful social messages of inclusivity and empowerment.

In the 21-kilometer half marathon, Prajakta Godbole secured the first position in the women’s category, making a remarkable debut. Tamsi Singh claimed second place, while Fulan Pal secured the third spot. In the men’s category for the same distance, M.D. Nurhasan clinched the top position, followed by Puniet Yadav in second place and Arun Rathod in third.

The grand finale of the 42-kilometer marathon saw Thirtha Pun seizing the coveted first place, with Mohit Rathod securing second place and Tadakhe Chindu finishing third. The winners were honored with cash prizes and medals, elevating their achievements and acknowledging their hard work and dedication.

The event was graced by the presence of prominent personalities, including sports figures such as Parul Chaudhari, the event ambassador for Asian Games, and renowned film personalities like Mahesh Manjrekar, Dattu More, Samir Chaughule, Arun Kadam, and Omkar Raut.

Among the dignitaries attending were politicians like MLA Hitendra Thakur, Kshitij Thakur, Rajesh Patil, Khasdar Rajendra Gawit, former Mayor Rajiv Patil, Narayan Mankar, Praveen Shetty, and various government officials.
