4. Civic Elections and Political Sensitivities
Initially, the VVCMC announced that the 13th edition of the marathon was cancelled, but later clarified that it was “temporarily postponed” due to the upcoming civic elections. In reality, the event’s fate now seems tied to the political outcome of those elections, making its revival uncertain.
5. End of a Political Era
For nearly 14 years, the Vasai-Virar Marathon was closely associated with the BVA and the Thakur family, who used the event to unite supporters and showcase development efforts. Their defeat in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections marked a significant political shift in Palghar district, diminishing their influence and, indirectly, the continuity of this event.
With Dr. Hemant Sawra, Sneha Dubey Pandit, Rajan Naik, and Vilas Tare now representing the region under the NDA banner, the marathon’s organization has lost its political patronage.

The cancellation has deeply upset athletes and sports lovers. For over a decade, the Vasai-Virar Marathon was a symbol of local pride and had put the city on India’s sporting map. Now, with its removal from the national marathon calendar, Vasai-Virar has lost one of its signature identities.

Unless there is renewed coordination between the VVCMC, sports authorities, and local representatives, the return of the Vasai-Virar Marathon remains uncertain even in 2026.
