Eid is incomplete without sheer khurma, the traditional rice vermicelli pudding served during this festival. And lockdown has made it difficult to savour this dish.
Vasai MLA Hitendra Thakur distributed milk and vermicelli packets— the key ingredients to make this dessert— to over 50,000 homes in the Vasai-Virar region.
Various NGOs went around minority pockets in Vasai, Nalasopara, Virar, and Boisar distributing a litre of milk and a packet of vermicelli in the wee hours of Monday.
The Vasai-Virar region is the hotspot of Covid-19. The Palghar district administration has urged people to celebrate Eid at home.
Samadhan Foundation, an NGO, that has been providing food packets to migrants in the region, identified areas where milk and vermicelli packets could be distributed.
A foundation member Faizal Qureshi said that they tried to reach out to as many families as possible. He said that with shops shut, people were not able to procure ingredients for sheer khurma.
