An imposter was apprehended by the Manickpur police in Vasai on Monday thanks to the awareness and presence of mind displayed by a 32-year-old woman.
According to her police statement, the woman, who works as a kitchen, was on her way home when she was approached on the Vasai skywalk by an imposter posing as a police officer. The imposter made outrageous claims and threatened to file a complaint against her.
Fearful of the threats, the woman gave the man Rs. 1500. She did note, however, that the man was robbing other passersby under various pretences. The woman, sensing something odd, informed two uniformed constables about the occurrence, who arrived on the scene quickly and caught the imposter after a high-speed chase.
The imposter, Sandip Devgirkar (38) of Virar, was apprehended and charged under sections 170 (impersonating a public worker) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. The Manickpur police are continuing their investigation into the case, not ruling out the possibility of his involvement in a number of other recorded or unreported crimes.
