One death, rise in cases trigger sealing of Vasai-Virar, Saphale housing societies

To curb cluster infections, the Palghar district administration on Wednesday sealed several housing societies and areas in Vasai, Virar and Palghar and started door to-door screening of residents.

With the number of positive Covid-19 cases in the Vasai-Virar region touching eight, entry and exit points in Sai Nagar and Evershine Sector 6 in Vasai, Gokul Township in Virar and Nilemore in Nalasopara have been sealed. Sai Nagar, which comprises 100 buildings, was cordoned off after an air hostess, who had recently returned from New York, tested positive late on Tuesday. Residents were told to stay indoors and all shops, except medical stores, asked to down shutters. Officials said essential supplies will be provided to residents.

In Palghar, the strict action came after the death of a 50-year-old man from Saphale at Palghar rural hospital on Tuesday and reports of two positive cases. With repeated announcements to stay indoors failing, police have begun seizing non-essential vehicles plying on road—80 vehicles were seized, 31 people booked for roaming around without valid reasons and 343 cases lodged against shops and establishments.

On Wednesday, the Saphale gram panchayat put the housing society where the 50-year-old victim lived under quarantine and sealed the entire area, including the local market. Health officials visited homes and tested residents, including 11 members of the victim’s family.

The Edwan primary health centre and a private hospital in Saphale where the victim had check-ups were also sealed and all staff, including doctors, put in quarantine.
