Virar police and state revenue department on Sunday raided an illegal sand mining spot and set a boat on fire. Acting on a tip-off, the raid team reached the banks of Tansa lake, near Chimne village, around 12pm.
Of the three boats found dredging sand, two fled into the sea. Police nabbed a boat rider. The boat was carrying sand worth Rs 7.5 lakh.
The boat with suction pumps was set on fire on the banks of the lake.
Police said information on the boats that escaped is being gathered.
A case under sections of Indian Penal Code and Environment Protection Act and Land Revenue Act has been registered.
