Vegetable vendors in a crowded market in Vasai on Sunday ended up throwing vegetables on the road in protest against civic staffers asking them to move to a nearby ground.
Videos of the vegetables scattered on the road went viral leading to anger among residents who are finding it difficult to procure vegetables and fruits during the lockdown.
The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) had shut down the market on Ambadi Road in Vasai (west) around a week ago. Despite that tempos loaded with vegetables and fruits were entering the market leading to massive crowd.
The municipality has short listed a few grounds in the region to hawk fruits and vegetables. A few days ago the vendors in the Ambadi market were asked to move to the nearby Manickpur ground. They were also given permission to hawk vegetables and fruits outside housing colonies using hand carts.
On Sunday when a civic team visited the market, they were shocked to see the crowd. They seized the vegetables and loaded it on trucks.
The agitated hawkers, who were in huge numbers, began picking up the vegetables like cauliflower and brinjal and threw it on the main road.
Civic staff took videos of the action and said that police case will be filed against them. The vegetables thrown on the road left residents of surrounding buildings in a state of anger.
