The Augustine’s Vasai Alumni is holding the AVA Gala Night, on Friday, December 23, 2022, from 6 pm onwards, in the school compound, as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Saint Augustine’s High School, Barampur, Vasai Road, District Palghar. About two dozen ex students and their family members, along with one former teacher, will take the stage, and exhibit their talents. The repertoire will consist of contemporary and old Bollywood songs, instrumental music, English numbers including rock and roll, romantic oldies, East Indian songs, and a Vasai Masala by the former teacher. There will be a time for felicitating former teachers, and an awards evening where those who reached the first and second places in AVA Games 2022 will be given medals. It will also be the time for the audience to convert the ground into a stage and dance into the night. The organizers have promised an evening that participants will remember for a long time. This event is opened to the public at large.
AVA is the alumni body of this school.
It was in the year 1966 that Monsignor Rev. Andrew Dias started a small school in the compound of the Krupa Mata Cathedral, Papdy, Vasaigaon. The SAHS became a full fledged school in 1972 when the first batch of SSC students passed out from this campus. That very year, the Christian Brothers took over the management of the school. They bought a nine acre plot at Barampur, abutting the main road, and constructed a new building and created a very good campus. This year is celebrated as the golden jubilee year of this milestone. About fifty batches of students have passed out from this campus, and a good number of the former students have held, or are holding, high positions in various walks of life. The school has many achievements to its credit, and over the last half a century, it has uplifted the academic and sports standards of Vasai.
Since the golden jubilee celebration cannot be complete without the participation of former students, it was decided by a group of past students to launch the Augustine’s Vasai Alumni, and become part of the celebrations in a very proactive manner.
To start with, a series of meetings were held on Sunday evenings by the representatives of the batches that had passed out during the last half a century. Then, during the next phase, the past students were contacted and invited for an evening of high tea, reunion, renewal of friendship, visit the school once again, and nostalgia moments. A good number of former students attended these sessions.
After that, the AVA Games 2022 was held on the 5th and 6th of November, 2022, in the school compound.
The event was inaugurated by Mr Raphael Dias, father of an ex student Mr Leslie Dias. Both, father and son being sportsmen at the national level, were also the main sponsors of the event. Speaking on the occasion, Dias complimented the AVA for conceiving and organising such an unique event.
The event began with opening prayers by Rev Fr Neelam, also an ex student. Among the special guests were ex teachers who recalled their years spent in the school campus. Principal Br Anish appreciated the hard work put in by the school alumni.
Brand AVA made its debut with the introduction of branded merchandise like jerseys, caps, badges and wristlets.
A total of 104 participants took part in the knockout tournaments of table tennis, carroms, box cricket and basketball. Some senior ex students were back on playground after many years. Most participants proved that they had not lost their playing skills despite advancing years. All who participated were winners because they got a chance to once again relive, even though it was for a brief moment, the joys of playing in the school playground along with former classmates.
Over a score of banners were sponsored by individuals and jointly by batchmates that co-sponsored the event.
In turn, AVA contributed a brand new championship table and racquets for the school students to practice and compete. Ex-students individually and jointly also contributed to the various projects to improve the sports facilities.
AVA’s mission and vision document seeks to foster resilient ties between the alumni, teachers, students, and the school. Through a diversity of events, programs and services, it seeks to remain engaged with the alma-mater and help its future.
The next event will be a carnival festival.
All the funds raised through this program will be utilized for the activities of AVA, upgrading the school infrastructure, and helping the deserving and needy students.
