Two men were arrested for swapping senior citizen’s debit cards with fake ones as they tried to withdraw money from ATM kiosks, and later making withdrawals.
Rajendra Bhatt (33) and Jeetendra Tiwari (32), who were caught in Vasai, played ‘good samaritans’ trying to ‘help’ the elderly make withdrawals. They were trapped by the Valiv police recently, and 53 stolen debit cards were recovered from them. Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap at an ATM kiosk in Vasai Phata.
The two would target the elderly or women with children trying to withdraw money. The victims would hand over their cards and PINs to them. After helping them make withdrawals, they would swap the cards with expired cards. The two would then later use the cards and PINs to withdraw money. The victims would learn about the theft only later, when they received intimation from the banks on their registered numbers.
The duo has been remanded to police custody.
