A dead body of a man was found floating in the Papad Khind dam in Virar East on Thursday morning. Following the incident, water supply from the dam has been temperoarily suspended, while the dead body has been sent for post mortem.
On October 19 morning, the security guards placed at the Papad Khind dam, spotted a floating dead body of a man and promptly informed the Virar police, who along with the Fire Brigade personnel, fished out the dead body. According to Jayesh Khandarkar of the Virar police station, “there wasn’t any identification on the deceased. The details have been circulated to identify the dead, who is said to be aged between 30 and 35 years. Khandarkar also confirmed that the cause of death, as per the initial post mortem report, is said to be drowning. An accidental death report has been registered in the matter. The cops are ascertaining if this was an accidental fall or a suicide or a murder.
Commissioner of the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation, Satish Lokhande, said, “We have sent the water samples for testing purpose and have stopped the water supply from this dam.” He also assured that the citizens need not worry as provisions have already been made for the required water to be sourced from the nearby Usgaon Dam and Surya Dam.
The incident has once again raised questions over safety and security of the dam which provides potable water. In the past, cleanliness issues along the dam’s boundary have been raised along with cases of stray animal freely moving around and within the dam premises coupled with the presence of drug addicts and booze parties in the region.
Vilas Chorghe, former Corporator of Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) said, “In the past we have sent several letters complaining about lack of security of the dam and the way it gets dirty due to religious rituals conducted round the year.”
However, Lokhande maintained, “Required security measures are in place and this was an unfortunate incident.”
