Vasai-Virar to get disabled friendly

The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has passed a proposal to make the region disabled access friendly.So far 2,621 persons with disabilities have registered with the municipality. The civic administration has earmarked Rs 5 crore for the financial year 2017-18 to make access to disabled people. The proposal includes constructing ramps and escalators at civic buildings and public places in the region.

In addition, recruiting differently abled people in civic offices and giving Rs 2,000 a month to differently abled people above 60 years has also been approved in the general body meeting of the civic house.

In 2014, the municipality had undertaken a census of differently abled people in the region. Till November last year, the municipality has claimed to have spent around Rs 31 lakh for the welfare of disabled people.

A proposal to make the region disabled friendly was passed earlier about three years ago. But it remained on paper.
