A day after the Manikpur police booked self-claimed godman Ram Babu for allegedly spreading superstition, the Vasai Virar Christians Association have come out in support of the international preacher and have threatened to stage a protest against the police for harassing the community with false cases.
DNA, on February 11, had reported about how the event Vasai Prarthana Mahotsav by Vikas Poojary of Grace Generation Ministries from February 7 to 9 turned controversial after Prakash Lodaya, a local resident, complained to the police leading to a FIR being lodged on Saturday against Poojary and Pastor Ram Babu under The Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013. Ram Babu has been accused of claiming to have cured disabilities and fooling the attendees by later collecting money from them in the name of donations.
“Few people are trying to suppress our Christian community. Earlier too they have filed false cases against us. We hold prayer services and do not indulge in superstitious activities. The allegations are false and we will co-operate with the police for the investigations,” said Poojary, organiser of the event.
Joe Joe Jacob, President, Vasai Virar Christians Association condemned the police action and said, “We cannot let the police interfere in our faith. Black magic or any superstitious activities were not practiced at the event. The police should have verified the facts before registering the FIR.” He added, “We will come out on the streets with all the community leaders and members to protest against the police for filing a false complaint. We will also meet senior police officers from the Maharashtra police department. Just because we are a minority community, we cannot let the government harass us.”
Anil Patil, Police Inspector, Manickpur police station, said, “We are investigating the matter and we will summon the organizer of the event for the statement.”
