Around 500 couples are set to tie the knot together, under the government's mass-marriage scheme, on January 29, 2012. What makes this event different, however, is that Kshitij Thakur, MLA from Nalla Sopara, and his childhood sweetheart will also take part in the ceremony.
The guest list for the ceremony has around 1 lakh people on it, including CM Prithviraj Chavan, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and at least 300 MLAs from across the state. It is planned to be a quite affair, with the theme 'no glitz and glamour'. There will be no loud speakers that disturb the neighbourhood either.
Under the 'Shubh-Mangal' scheme, the government gives each couple Rs 12,000. Kshitij's father, Hitendra, said, "We have not printed any wedding cards for our son, but only a small pamphlet announcing the wedding.”
