A Nalla Sopara man was arrested for allegedly killing his Facebook friend after she refused to have sex with him after the victim’s footwear was found outside his residence, the police said.
Haridas Nirgude (21) was arrested on Monday for killing Ankita More (20) at his sister’s flat in Nalla Sopara (East). Besides the footwear, the police also found More’s cell phone and purse in Nirgude’s flat.
Nirgude would be produced before the Vasai court on Tuesday, said senior police inspector Kishore Khairnar of Tulinj police station.
The police started questioning Nirgude as out of the three ground floor flats in Taniya Monarch building, Alkapuri, Nalla Sopara (East), where More’s body was found on Sunday, two apartments are occupied by senior citizens. They reasoned that a senior citizen would have found it hard drag More’s body and dump it near the staircase, where it was found.
When the police searched Nirgude’s flat, they found blood stains on the bed and near the bathroom. Nirgude could not give satisfactory replies and he later confessed to the crime, though the motive is yet to be ascertained, Khairnar said.
The police said More was having her menstrual cycle and they have sent the body for post-mortem. Its report is awaited on Tuesday. More could have refused to have sex with Nirgude because she was having her periods and he may have forced himself on her, which may have led to the bloodstains, the police said. Officials said they are probing all possible angles.
Nirgude allegedly killed More, a Vashi resident, by strangulating her with a shoe lace. Khairnar said that after strangling More, a panicked Nirgude rushed to a nearby medical store to fetch medicines, in the hope that More would be alive, but she was already dead.
Realising More was dead, Nirgude dragged the body and dumped it near the staircase, and quietly went to his flat, the police said. The building had no CCTV cameras, and one saw More enter the building.
Nirgude befriended More through Facebook a few months ago and both would chat for hours together, the police said. On Sunday, Nirgude called her to his flat, as his sister and brother-in-law with whom he stayed had gone out. More told her parents that she was visiting a friend in Nalla Sopara, and when she reached Nirgude’s flat, after a brief chat, Nirgude wanted to have sex with her. More refused and she stood up to go back to Vashi in a fit of rage, the police said.
A dejected Nirgude murdered More, and dumped the body near the staircase to make it appear as if the victim had fainted while coming down the stairs, the police said. “When neighbours gathered at the spot, Nirgude was also present and feigned ignorance about her identity, but the footwear found near Nirgude’s doorstep gave us a strong suspicion,” Khairnar said.
“We have arrested Nirgude under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC and will produce him before the Vasai court on Tuesday,” he said.
Nirgude worked as a salesman in a gift card gallery in Mumbai, and hails from Latur. After passing Class 12 he had been staying with his sister and brother-in-law in their flat since 2016, the police said.
