Cage farming of lobsters helps Vasai fishermen cash in on catch
December last year, Mahesh Mhatre, 42, a fisherman from Kalamb village in Vasai was disappointed with the low returns that lobster fishing yielded.
The delicious seafood fetches high prices in international markets, but exporters were rejecting the catch from Kalamb as the lobsters were undersized, weighing only up to 50gm. Selling the baby lobsters in local markets earned him a meagre Rs100 – Rs150 per kg. Besides, over-fishing of egg-bearing females had also reduced the catch.

For the second consecutive year, the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) will be organising a Vasai Vijayotsav to celebrate the 274th year of the Vasai Fort conquest by Maratha warrior Chimaji Appa, on May 12 and 13.
The younger brother of Maratha warrior Bajirao Peshwa, Chimaji Appa captured the Bassein Fort (now Vasai) from the Portuguese, who pulled out of Vasai in May 1739.
HC orders status quo on razing home near stupa
The high court on Thursday directed status quo in a case pertaining to the demolition of a house in the vicinity of a protected Buddhist stupa, a dome structure, in Nalasopara.
A division bench of Justice P B Majmudar and Justice Anoop Mohta was hearing a petition filed by Sunanda Sitad, an adivasi widow, challenging the February 8, 2010, show-cause notice by the department of archaeology asking her to demolish the 5,000 sq ft house, saying it is an encroachment built upon a mound. The stupa was declared a historical monument, the petition said.
